All of our original music was recorded a long time ago on analog tape. We did two tracks in a semi-digital environment (Stand Up And Fight and No Paradise Tonight) but tape was the order of the day back then. In fact, a 16 track desk was a real luxury and some of the stuff was recorded on 8 track. No money for producers and a very tight deadline to record because of the cost of studio time means that the quality is a little variable also. We have converted the original cassette tape masters into mp3 now so we can make these available as a download (hopefully - when we get the technology hooked up that is) to whoever may want them. Sadly we don't have the original tape masters so there is no possibility of remix/remastering.
We released two "albums" in our own right: "Old Habits Die Hard" and "The Amy Tapes" and these tracks are taken from those albums. Old Habits was recorded at Sirocco Studios in Kilmarnock and engineered by Clark Sorley. It was released in 1985 and, astonishingly, a copy of it sold on eBay for $135 last year. The Amy Tapes was really a collection of demos and pre-album production works recorded at a variety of studios throughout Scotland and was released in 1988.
The songs were of their time and need to be listened to with that in mind of course. Playing them back now, inevitably, we wish we'd had more money to spend on more studio time/better studios and get proper producers involved.
They are what they are though and overall we were very proud of them at the time; some of them still stand up pretty well now in fact. All songs were written by Chic and Doogie with the exception of Amy and Loneliest Night which both had substantial input from Andy. Paul played on five of the tracks from Old Habits and our plethora of other drummers played on the other tracks...it's too long ago to remember who played on what to tell the truth. Four tracks were never recorded formally in a studio and so don't appear here: Everytime I Close My Eyes (a hugely popular live number), Long After Dark, The Last Goodbye (which only Big Al remembers and claims to have written) and Heroes, although we have a live mix from an 8 track somewhere kicking about of these also.
One of the tracks featured, A Little Bit Of Luck, was never played live and was recorded in one take at Sirocco. It's one of Chic's favourite recordings. "We spent as much time as we could afford on all of the songs but on that one we were running out of time and money so we just went in, pretty much wrote it there and then and put it down. I love the feel of it and I think everyone was very natural, relaxed and loose when we did it."
We're not trying to make money out of our old demos now by making them available for download. All profits will go direct to our nominated charity.
If you have problems downloading we're happy to give them away free if you send us a blank CD and cover the mail/shipping costs...but you might want to add a few quid for the kids in La Paz :-) |
